Raipur (Chhattisgarh) – In a major breakthrough in the fight against Naxalism, 28 Naxalites surrendered before the police in Narayanpur district on 25 November. Among them were 19 women. Of the 28, 22 carried a combined reward of ₹89 lakh. Sundarraj Pattilingam, Inspector General of Police for the Bastar division, stated that these individuals were members of the Naxalites’ ‘Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee’ and surrendered before senior officers.
Government initiatives influenced Maoist group
Police officials stated that the Maoists were influenced by the Chhattisgarh Government’s ‘Niyad Nellanar Yojana’ and ‘Poona argham’ rehabilitation initiative. Niyad Nellanar is a development scheme implemented in remote regions, while Poona Margham is a rehabilitation programme run by the Bastar Police.
The surrendered Naxalites include four hardcore cadres – Pandi Dhruv alias Dinesh (33), Dule Mandavi alias Munni (26), Chhattis Poyam (18) and Padni Oyam (30).
Narayanpur Superintendent of Police Robinson Guria said that 287 Maoists have returned to the mainstream in the district so far this year. He added that the end of Maoist ideology is now near.
