“If Zohran Mamdani performs well, I will be happy !” : Trump

Statement by Donald Trump after meeting New York’s newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Washington (USA) – “We want to make New York great once again. The better Zohran Mamdani performs, the happier I will be,” said U.S. President Donald Trump after meeting his staunch political rival and newly elected New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the White House for the first time.
This meeting holds great significance because both leaders had exchanged intense criticism during the New York mayoral election campaign. Trump had labelled Mamdani a “communist lunatic” and a “jihadi,” while Mamdani had called Trump a “dictator” and a “fascist.”

1. Although a heated discussion was expected between Trump and Mamdani, the meeting reportedly remained cordial. Trump praised Mamdani and described the interaction as “very good and productive.”

2. Mamdani also called the meeting productive. He said, “We discussed rising living costs — rent, food, electricity bills, and overall survival. Both of us share the intention of improving the lives of the 8.5 million people living in New York.”

3. Trump remarked that even if Mamdani’s views differ on certain issues, dialogue will certainly lead to a solution. “Either he will convince me, or I will convince him — but ultimately the final decision will be the one that is best for New York.”

4. During the meeting, when media reporters asked Mamdani whether he still considers Trump a fascist, Trump smiled and said to him: “It is fine — go ahead and say yes, give them the headline. That is easier than explaining. It does not bother me.”

5. Trump clarified that both leaders share one common goal — to rebuild New York into a great city again. He also stated that if Mamdani succeeds in bringing positive change, no one will be happier than him.

6. Trump further added that Mamdani might surprise many conservative Americans, saying:
“Some of his ideas are actually not very different from mine.”

Editorial Perspectives

  • Some may say even a chameleon would feel ashamed watching how quickly Trump — who until yesterday called Mamdani a ‘jihadi’ and ‘crazy communist’ — suddenly changed his tone after meeting him!
  • And if Mamdani turns New York into an ‘Islamic capital’ like Kabul, Baghdad, or Riyadh — what will Trump do then ?
