Karnataka’s Congress Government: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assures minority delegation

(Will the Congress government of Karnataka lift the ban on cow slaughter?)
Belagavi (Karnataka) – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has assured a minority delegation of the South Kanara District Congress Committee that appropriate action will be initiated in the upcoming Belagavi Assembly session to repeal the ‘Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2021’ as well as the ‘Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, 2021’, both of which had been enacted by the previous BJP Government.
Against the backdrop of recent incidents involving cattle transportation in the South Kanara district, leaders of the Minority Wing of the South Kanara District Congress, along with a delegation of the district committee, met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at his official residence, ‘Kaveri’ and submitted a memorandum to him. The Congress party had promised in its 2023 Assembly election manifesto that, upon coming to power, it would repeal these laws within a year. The memorandum requested that, in line with this pledge, necessary action be taken in the upcoming Belagavi session to repeal both laws. The memorandum stated that the BJP Government’s cattle slaughter prohibition laws had created an atmosphere of fear in the South Kanara district, with distressing incidents such as the Police firing on cattle smugglers and seizing their homes and properties. It further mentioned that this ‘black law’ had created a situation where farmers were unable to sell their cattle. The memorandum also alleged that, under the pretext of the ‘Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act’, individuals linked to the RSS-affiliated organisations were continually oppressing minorities. According to the Constitution, every citizen has the right to practise any religion without coercion; therefore, enforcing a conversion prohibition law in Karnataka is unconstitutional, the delegation claimed.
