Turkiye denies airspace clearance to aircraft transporting helicopters to India

Ankara (Turkiye) – After assisting Pakistan during the India-Pakistan conflict in May, Turkiye is now being viewed as a new strategic challenge for India. In 2020, India had signed an agreement with the US to purchase helicopters. However, reports now indicate that a cargo aircraft transporting three of these helicopters to India was denied permission to fly through Turkish airspace.

Growing proximity between Pakistan and Turkiye

Following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Turkiye immediately sent its warship to the Karachi port upon sensing escalating tensions. After China, Turkiye has emerged as one of the largest suppliers of weapons to Pakistan. The strengthening ties between Pakistan and Turkiye are creating new complications for India.

Air Marshal Anil Chopra noted that religious similarities also play a role in this relationship; both nations encourage radical Islamic ideologies. Turkiye aspires to assume a leadership position in the Islamic world, and Pakistan is a key partner in that strategy. Turkiye consistently supports Pakistan’s stance on the Kashmir issue, which directly impacts India. Chopra emphasized that India must strengthen its military capabilities and deepen cooperation with nations in West Asia and Europe that are concerned about Turkiye’s expansionist agenda. With prudent diplomacy and independent strategic policy, India can effectively counter the Turkiye–Pakistan alliance.

Editorial Perspective

The Indian Government must teach Turkiye – consistently provoking India – a timely lesson. Otherwise, like Pakistan, Turkiye too will continue to antagonise India !
