Explosion of seized explosives at Naugam Police Station in Kashmir: 9 dead, 27 injured

Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir) – At 11.20 p.m. on 14 November, an explosion occurred inside the Naugam Police Station, killing 9 people and injuring 27 others. The injured are undergoing treatment in hospital. State Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat stated that the incident was accidental. The explosion took place while samples were being collected from seized explosives. Among the dead are a Police Inspector, 3 members of the forensic team, 2 photographers from the Crime Branch, 2 Revenue officials, and a tailor.

1. The explosives had been seized from the rented house of Dr Muzammil Ganai, who was arrested in Faridabad, Haryana. Since the case falls under the jurisdiction of the Naugam Police Station, the seized material had been brought there. The same case is connected to the bomb blast near the Red Fort in Delhi, in which 13 people were killed.

2. The sound of the explosion at the police station was heard several kilometres away. Several vehicles in the vicinity caught fire after the blast. Ambulances and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot immediately and began rescue operations.

3. The Naugam Police Station had come into focus in October when posters linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed were found in the area. Initially thought to be a local issue, further investigation revealed the involvement of a terrorist group. This led to a raid in Faridabad, where 2,900 kilograms of ammonium nitrate were seized and several doctors were arrested.
