Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College Allots 42 seats for Muslims and 8 for Hindus under MBBS Course

Devout Hindu organisations protest while the sources claim as admissions according to the rules

Jammu – In the first admission list released by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence’ at Katara in Jammu, 42 seats have been allotted to Muslim students out of 50 seats and only 8 seats have been secured by Hindu students. There has been a rage in social media as soon as the list was published. Many people have asked why there were so few Hindu students in the list when the institute is run by a Hindu Trust.

1. This college is run by ‘Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board’. This Board is a religious organisation and the expenses to run the college are met out of donations collected in Mata Vaishno Devi Temple.

2. Mr Rakesh Bajrangi, the President of ‘Rashtriya Bajrang Dal’, Jammu has strongly opposed it alleging that the decision is discriminatory and Dy Governor Manoj Sinha should intervene in the matter.

Rules followed under the admission procedure

The admissions in medical colleges are based on the marks secured in the NEET examination conducted across the country. It has no scope for any religion or religious connections. In private medical colleges, 50% admissions are given through ‘All-India Quota’ and balance 50% from the State quota. In Jammu-Kashmir, a similar procedure has been followed. Reservations are applicable only to students from scheduled castes and tribes, other backward classes and economically weak sections. There is no reservation based on any religion.

Editorial Perspectives

  •  A law should be passed to admit only Hindu students in the education institutions run by temples.
  • Recently, the Police arrested two doctors in connection with their involvement in ‘Jihadi’ terrorist activities in Kashmir. What does this incident  indicate ?
