Massive explosions near Red Fort : 8 killed

  • Possibility of heavy casualties

  • Suspected terrorist attack, though not yet confirmed

  • High alert issued in Delhi and Mumbai

New Delhi – A series of powerful explosions occurred around 7 p.m. near Gate No. 1 of the Chandni Chowk Metro Station, close to the historic Red Fort. The blasts triggered a massive fire in eight cars parked nearby. Official reports confirm that 8 people have died and 8 others have been injured, though authorities fear the death toll could rise.

Eyewitnesses said the explosions were so intense that they could be heard up to 1.5 kilometres away, and human body parts were found scattered up to 20 metres from the site. The walls of surrounding buildings reportedly shook due to the impact.

The explosion site is in close proximity to the Gauri Shankar Temple and the Digambar Jain Temple. The blast shattered the windows of both temples, and an old temple wall nearby is said to have collapsed. Some body parts were also found inside the temple premises.

Following the incident, fire brigade and police teams rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. The injured were immediately taken to nearby hospitals.

The area of Chandni Chowk where the blasts occurred houses a large electronics market, which is usually crowded. Hence, the possibility of a higher death toll cannot be ruled out. Fortunately, since the Red Fort remains closed on Mondays, the crowd was lighter than usual, potentially preventing a larger tragedy.
