Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Bangladesh’s onion reserves have nearly exhausted. At this critical time, India imposed a ban on onion exports to keep domestic prices under control, which has had a direct and significant impact on markets in Bangladesh. Within just a few days, onion prices have doubled. In major cities such as Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Khulna, onions are being sold at 110 to 120 taka (approximately ₹80 to ₹86) per kilogram. Just a few days ago, the same onions were priced at 60 taka per kilogram.
“Unless onion imports from India resume, or the new local crop hits the markets, prices are likely to rise even further,” said importers from Chittagong and Rajshahi.
Are traders creating an artificial shortage ?
Meanwhile, the Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has termed this price rise completely unjustified. The association has levelled serious allegations that certain traders are artificially creating a scarcity in the market to inflate prices.
