Pakistani Hindu girl returned to her family following Court order

Abduction and forced marriage 3 months ago

Karachi (Pakistan) – On the orders of a local court in Sindh Province, a Hindu girl, Sunita Maharaj, has been reunited with her family after nearly three months. According to Hindu community representatives, Sunita was abducted from Kunrinagar in Mirpurkhas district, forcibly converted to Islam, and married to an elderly Muslim man. Lower Court at Umarkot had ordered that Sunita be handed over to her family on 1st Nov., informed Hindu activist Shiv Kachi.

A Hindu leader and Human Rights activist in the region, stated, “Sunita is among the very few who are fortunate to get justice. Most similar cases never reach the court because the victims’ families lack resources and support.”

Local leaders working on minority and human rights issues have expressed serious concern over the recurring pattern of abduction, forced conversion, and forced marriage of Hindu girls in Pakistan. Advocate Chandar Kohli said that such incidents have created deep fear and insecurity within the Hindu community, particularly among financially weaker families who struggle to pursue legal help.

He further said that community organizations are increasingly conducting awareness programmes to help Hindu families understand their legal rights and the procedures to seek protection in such cases.
