Ottawa (Canada) – The issue of Khalistani terrorism, a long-standing point of tension in India–Canada relations, was formally raised in the Canadian Parliament. In a significant all-party meeting held after the formation of the new government, serious concern was expressed over the growing Khalistani terror network and the influence of foreign powers within Canada. Representatives from 12 different community groups, including Indian, Iranian, Venezuelan, Cuban, Christian, and Jewish organisations, participated in the discussion.
Groups misusing democratic freedoms
Lawmakers highlighted that several terrorist and separatist organisations are exploiting Canada’s democratic freedoms to undermine the nation’s unity and reputation. These groups, under the pretext of political activism, are promoting violence and secessionist ideologies.
Demand to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation
The meeting focused on the growing threat posed by Khalistani and other extremist factions. Delegates pointed out that these groups are taking advantage of Canada’s open and democratic framework. A formal demand was also made to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation, as has already been done by several other democratic nations.
Foreign funding and ideological influence
Participants noted that certain organisations receive ideological and financial backing from foreign sources with the intent to sow discord within Canada’s multicultural society. The country must stand firm on its core values of human rights, equality, and peaceful coexistence, and must not bow to forces that propagate hatred or division, they asserted.
Unity between ruling and opposition parties
Both the ruling and opposition parties took a united stand on the issue, agreeing that foreign interference and extremist ideologies pose a grave threat to Canada’s national security and democratic institutions.
India-related context
The discussion also referred to recent gang violence incidents in Canada. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has been declared a terrorist organisation by the Canadian government, with some of its members reportedly hiding in India. India has repeatedly urged Canada to act decisively against Khalistani terrorists and impose restrictions on their activities.
