Paris (France) – The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has warned Pakistan that removal from the ‘grey list’ does not exempt it from investigation into illicit financial transactions or terrorist financing.

The FATF, known as the organization that monitors terrorist financing worldwide, has once again reprimanded Pakistan.

The FATF removed Pakistan from the ‘Grey List’ in October 2022. After the FATF President made this statement recently at a press conference in France, there is now speculation that action will be taken against Pakistan again.

The FATF said that no country on or off the ‘Grey List’ is safe from illicit financial transactions or criminal acts committed by terrorists. Countries like Pakistan should remain more vigilant and committed. FATF also warned that it will continue to monitor transactions.

What is ‘FATF’ ?

The FATF is an organization that works to prevent money flowing freely around the world from being used for terrorist activities. It monitors the need to prevent international financial fraud, terrorist financing, and threats to the international economy, and sets out the necessary rules, guidelines, and action plans for countries in this regard.

What is ‘Grey List’ ?

The FATF has a ‘grey list’. According to the FATF, countries that consistently fail to prevent international financial fraud, are unable to stop the financing of terrorist activities and therefore are consistently criticized at the global level are included in this list. Pakistan was also on this list for 4 years. There are currently 23 countries on this list.

Editorial Perspectives

  • After the terrorist attack by Pakistan in Pahalgam (Kashmir) in April, why did the FATF not take immediate action against Pakistan and put it back on the ‘Grey List’ ?
  • Despite being an international organization that keeps a close eye on financial transactions around the world, Pakistan is constantly committing terrorist acts against India. It is well known that Pakistan is not worried about international pressure. Therefore, a question mark is raised on ‘FATF’ itself.
