Ranchi (Jharkhand) — A heated argument broke out between a lawyer and a judge in the Jharkhand High Court after the judge made a remark on the lawyer’s argument.
The lawyer said, “I can present my arguments in my own way. Do not attempt to insult any lawyer. The atmosphere in the country’s courts is already tense — please don’t cross limits. I have been practicing law for 40 years,” reprimanding the judge during the session.
The incident took place on October 16, and a video of the confrontation has been widely circulated on social media.
On October 16, Justice Rajesh Kumar was hearing a case related to the restoration of an electricity supply. The electricity distribution department had mentioned the inconvenience caused after disconnecting the power supply to the residence of the lawyer’s client. Justice Rajesh Kumar delivered a ruling in favor of the argument presented by the lawyers. Subsequently, during the hearing of another case, a dispute erupted after Justice Kumar commented on the style of argument used by advocate Mahesh Tiwari. At that point, advocate Tiwari made the above statements, asserting his right to argue in his own way and criticizing the judge’s conduct.
Contempt of court proceedings have been initiated against advocate Mahesh Tiwari. The hearing took place on October 17 before a five-judge bench of the Jharkhand High Court, headed by Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan. The court has directed advocate Tiwari to present his defense within three weeks. The next hearing in this matter is scheduled for November 11.
