New Delhi – ‘War has many outcomes. Just because the situation is favourable doesn’t mean war should be waged. Decisions must be taken responsibly. In 1948, the Indian Army was in a strong position. Despite continuous opposition from Sardar Patel, Nehru declared a unilateral ceasefire. That is why Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) still exists today’, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in the Lok Sabha, responding to Congress’ accusations during a debate on Operation Sindoor. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, in his speech, had questioned : ‘If the Indian Army was in a good position, why wasn’t a war pursued ?’ Shah responded with the above statement.

PoK is not a part of India because of Congress

Amit Shah further said, ‘I speak as a student of history and say this with responsibility—Pakistan-occupied Kashmir exists solely because of Nehru. He is responsible. Even in 1950, Sardar Patel had opposed his decisions. In the 1971 war, Indira Gandhi split Pakistan into two. That was a major victory for India, one we will remember for centuries. There were 93,000 prisoners of war. India had control over 15,000 square kilometers of territory. A treaty was signed in Shimla, but we forgot to demand PoK. Had we demanded it then, today’s situation would not have arisen. We even returned the 15,000 square kilometers of land we had won. Action was to be taken against 150 Pakistani officers, but it wasn’t. Today Congress asks, ‘Will PoK be taken back ?’ The answer is—if PoK had been taken back in 1948, we wouldn’t need to launch strikes on terrorist camps today’.

1. In 1960, Nehru gave 80% of the Indus River’s water to Pakistan. During the 1971 Shimla Agreement, no discussion was held about PoK. Congress missed all these opportunities.

2. Amit Shah said, ‘Pakistan is a reality created by Congress’s mistakes and acceptance. The Gandhi family is sympathetic to China. They must disclose what deals were made with China. Congress even returned areas that had been captured in victory to Pakistan’.

3. Shah criticised Congress for opposing the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). He added, ‘When action was taken against terrorists in the Batla House encounter, Sonia Gandhi cried. Congress has never taken any firm action against terrorism’.

4. ‘Yesterday, Congress asked what happened to the culprits of the Pahalgam attack. I will read out ten names—eight of those terrorists were neutralised during the Modi Government’s tenure. They were let go during Congress rule. Our forces have killed more than 100 terrorists. Shouldn’t we be proud of that ?’, Shah asked.

5. ‘Yesterday, former Home Minister P. Chidambaram asked, ‘What proof is there that these terrorists came from Pakistan ?’ I ask—are you trying to save Pakistan ? Why are you sympathetic towards them ?’, Shah said.
