Bihar Govt to Provide 125 Units of Free Electricity to Every Household

Over 1.67 Crore Families to Benefit

Patliputra (Bihar) – The Bihar Government has announced that 125 units of electricity per month will be provided free of cost to all households across the state. Additionally, over the next three years, domestic consumers will also be given access to solar power. The scheme was announced by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who stated that 1.67 crore families are expected to benefit from the initiative.

In a post on ‘X’, Nitish Kumar wrote,

“We have always ensured affordable electricity for everyone. Starting from 1 August, households will no longer have to pay for up to 125 units of electricity. This will be reflected in the electricity bill from July onwards.”

The Chief Minister also announced that solar power installations will be set up either on household rooftops or at nearby public spaces. For economically weaker families, the entire cost of installing these solar systems will be borne by the state government. Others too will be offered substantial assistance.

Editorial Perspective

At a time when the nation is already under immense debt, such populist schemes may appear beneficial on the surface, but are they truly sustainable for the country in the long run?
This growing trend of offering “freebies” must be curbed. The Union Government should issue clear guidelines to discourage such fiscal recklessness and ensure that State Governments act with financial responsibility.
