New Delhi – An advocate in the Supreme Court threatened to commit suicide if his argument in a criminal case was not accepted. During the hearing, petitioner advocate Ramesh Kumaran appeared via video conferencing and stated, “If the charges against the accused are dismissed, I will commit suicide.” (Pressuring the court to rule in one’s favor is akin to holding the judiciary hostage ! Strict action should be taken against such individuals. – Editor)
In response, a bench comprising Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan directed the advocate to submit a written apology by March 7. Justice Oka remarked, “How can you threaten the court with suicide if we do not accept your petition ? You are an advocate. We can instruct the Bar Council to suspend your license and register a case against you.”
