Artificial colours in toffees and cookies can cause cancer

Washington – Food and Drug Administration in the US has banned  the use of artificial colour ‘Red Dye no.3’.  In the US, the artificial colour in toffees, cookies and in some medicines, was in use for a long time. A study released this week by the US Food and Drug administration has revealed that Red Dye No. 3 increases the chances of developing cancer in animals.

1.  Previous studies had also shown concern about the harmful effects of Red Dye No.3. A 2012 report had also said that it could increase the chances of cancer in animals.

2.  ‘California Office of Environmental Health Hazards Assessment’ had studied that the use of this artificial colouring for some candies and cookies continued and  caused lack of concentration, irritability and other psychological disorders among children.

3.  Ken Cook. co-founder and president of the Environmental Working Group, said in a press release, “this decision is a victory for the health and safety of consumers”.

4.  The Karnataka Government had also banned rhodamine-B, an artificial colour used in cotton candy and gobi Manchurian, on 11 March 2024. Consuming food containing rhodamine-B could cause food poisoning and various serious illnesses. Cancer was also one of the probabilities.
