Hupari (Dist Kolhapur ), 11th January – An organisation named ‘Sunnat Jamiat’ illegally constructed a madarasa on the Government’s grazing land with property no. 4489 of survey no 844/A/1 in area ‘Hectare 11 R’ in Hatkanangale Taluka in Kolhapur district. Necessary papers proving the ownership of this organisation were not submitted by this organisation despite granting extension of time for submission. Mr Nitin Kakade of ‘Hindu Rashtra Samanvay Samiti’ and other pro-Hindu organisations and parties including Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) etc continuously followed up the matter with the municipal administration; when finally, the madarasa was demolished on 11.01.2025 as per the Supreme Court’s orders.
A few Muslims registered their protest silently in the area of madarasa, by holding photos of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and ‘Bharat-Ratna’ Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

The administration was fully prepared for taking this action and a large Police force was deployed in the madarasa area from early morning of 11.01.2025 as sought by the municipal administration. The unauthorised structure on the Government grazing land was demolished under tight Police security. The shops in the town were kept closed since morning in the background of this action.
1. Memoranda were submitted on number of occasions in this respect and demonstrations were staged to protest but no action was taken; therefore, Mr Nitin Kakade, Shiv Sena’s Rajendra Patil, Bajrang Dal’s Mr Prashant Salokhe and Mr Pratap Bhosale resorted to hunger strike in front of Hupari Town Council from 23.09.2024. Taking note of the hunger strike and participation of pro-Hindu organisations in this movement, the administration initiated action against the unauthorised madarasa by disconnection of power supply, sealing the madarasa, etc. The hunger strike was, therefore, stopped on 25.09.2024.
2. In one case the Supreme Court had issued a stay order against taking action against all illegal structures across the country. In the notice served on ‘Sunnat Jamiat’, Mr Ajay Narale, the Chief Officer of Hupari Municipal Council asked the organisation to submit all papers, construction permission and other related papers claiming ownership of the organisation; warning demolition of the unauthorised structure as per the Supreme Court’s orders.
3. Such notices were served repeatedly but ‘Sunnat Jamiat’ didn’t submit any papers; therefore, after the stipulated time, the administration demolished the unauthorised structure.
Support of all pro-Hindu organisations helped in the success of the drive – Nitin KakadeWe have been fighting this case for more than seven years. In fact, a case filed by ‘Sunnat Jamiat’ in Ichalkaranji Court was dismissed by the court on 04.04.2019, besides dismissing other related claims; therefore, it was proved that the construction was illegal. We have been fighting this case for the last seven years through submitting memoranda and staging demonstrations. After the hunger strike undertaken in September 2024, the madarasa was sealed by the administration and electricity was also disconnected; but the illegal structure was not demolished. The support of pro-Hindu organisations, extended time and again for this fight, helped in the success of our drive and the administration took such an action on 11.01.2025. |
Editorial PerspectiveThe administration should also take stringent action against those responsible for erecting and running the madarasa. |
