The United States slams Bangladesh
Washington (USA) – The United States has conveyed to Bangladesh that it is the responsibility of the interim Government to protect the minorities.
Addressing the situation in Bangladesh, US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel stated, “We are clear that fundamental freedoms must be respected. The Government should uphold the rule of law and ensure the protection of fundamental human rights. This will remain our focus. Protests of any kind are acceptable, but they must remain peaceful.”
Responding to a question, Vedant Patel emphasized, “Those in detention should be provided the opportunity to express their views. They must be treated in accordance with fundamental human rights principles.”
‘The killings of Hindus should be investigated’ : US Representative Brad Sherman
US Representative Brad Sherman emphasized that the interim Government of Bangladesh bears the responsibility to safeguard the nation’s minority Hindus. He urged the Government to address the grievances of thousands of Hindus protesting recent attacks and persecution.
Sherman noted the calls from the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, for a thorough investigation into the killings and rights violations that occurred during the unrest surrounding the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
