Fear that Waqf land may come under government control if there are amendments to the Waqf Act
Udupi (Karnataka) – Following the ongoing controversies regarding Waqf, Muslims who would otherwise donate land to Waqf are now hesitant to do so. The ‘Muslim Bandhu Manch’ has expressed concerns that the donated land will not be used for the intended purposes by the government. Anis Pasha of the Muslim Bandhu Manch stated that the amendments being made to the Waqf Act are causing unrest in the Muslim community. The donated properties are not in the names of the donors but are registered under the Waqf Board. There is a fear among people that these properties will go to the government after being donated. There is also concern among Muslims about whether the land will be used as intended. This mindset has been created by the government itself. Therefore, the Union government should withdraw the amendments it plans to implement in 2024, as demanded by the group.
Editorial PerspectiveRather than amending the Waqf Act, it should be abolished. The land acquired by Waqf is often more through appropriation than donations, and hence, it should be taken over by the government ! |
