New Delhi – Justice Sanjiv Khanna is set to become the 51st Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has recommended his name to the Government. Chief Justice Chandrachud is scheduled to retire on 10thNovember 2024. After his retirement, Justice Sanjiv Khanna is next in the seniority list.
The 64-year-old Justice Khanna will retire on May 13, 2025, meaning his tenure as Chief Justice will be only six months. As a Supreme Court judge, Justice Khanna has passed 65 judgments and has been a part of approximately 275 benches. He was also a part of the five-judge bench that delivered the crucial verdict in 2023, upholding the Government’s decision to revoke Article 370, which had been challenged in the Supreme Court through several petitions.
