Agartala (Tripura) – Muslims ransacked houses and shops of Hindus in Kadamtala in North Tripura district after organisers of a public Durga Puja asked for donations from a Muslim on the occasion of Navaratri. One person died and 17 others were injured in the incident that took place on 6th October, a news source reported. In the background of this incident, the administration has imposed a preventive order here.

1. According to a news site, a public Durga Puja organiser in Kadamtala asked for donations from a Muslim driver going to Assam leading to an argument between them. A large number of Muslims gathered in support of the Muslim driver and attacked the house of the Durga Puja organisers and the members of the house. Muslims vandalised two houses and one beauty parlour of Hindus.
3. Kadamtala market area was also set on fire. Armed Muslim mobs ransacked the shops in the market, scaring the Hindus. One person was killed in this attack, while 17 others were injured.
4. Due to this incident, there is an environment of fear among the Hindus. Videos of the immense damage caused to Hindu houses in this attack have been circulated on social media. A Hindu woman, who was horrified by this, reacted by saying, ‘The market has been destroyed in front of my house. Is this India ? Where do we go from here ?’
5. Following the incident, Tripura State Rifles (TRS) police and paramilitary forces were deployed to maintain law and order here. They also resorted to lathicharge and firing. In this case, the Police have so far arrested two Hindus namely Nirmalendu Sen and Dwipajoy Nath, and the administration has implemented Section 163 in the area.
6. The situation in Kadamtala is fully under control and Police are taking appropriate action. North Tripura District Police has said ‘Please do not spread rumours’. Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has taken note of the matter and directed to take strict action against those involved in the violence.
