  • Accused in Love Jihad sentenced to life imprisonment

Bareilly (UP) – ‘The main objective of Love Jihad is to alter the demography and create an international sensation. It is inspired by radical groups within religious framework. Non-Muslim women are being converted to Islam through sham marriages. Love Jihad incidents are happening due to foreign funding’, the fast-track Court’s additional District and sessions judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar said. He made this statement while sentencing the accused Mohammed Alim to life imprisonment in the Love Jihad case. In his 42-page order, the judge also defined the nature, purpose and financing of Love Jihad.

Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar further said,

1. This case is about illegal conversion through Love Jihad. In such a situation, it is primarily necessary to know that what is Love Jihad. In Love Jihad, men from a particular community systematically target women from another community to convert them into their religion through marriage. These people of a certain community marry women from other communities to convert the latter on the pretext of love, which is fake.

2. Illegal conversion of women through Love Jihad is practiced by some fanatics. These people are either involved in such activities or support them. It is important to note, however, that these actions do not reflect the religious community as a whole.

3. Funds used for Love Jihad are received from abroad.

4. There is a conspiracy to destabilise India just like Pakistan and Bangladesh. The unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country is threatened by this.

What is the matter

In 2022, the accused Mohammed Alim deceived the victim by introducing himself as Anand and raped her after marrying her as per Hindu customs. Following that, he raped her several times by threatening to defame her using her photographs and videos. This came to light in May 2023.

Who is Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar ?

Justice Ravi Kumar Diwakar, while in the District Court of Varanasi, had ordered a videographic survey of the Gyanvapi near the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and to seal the wazu khana (a place where hands and feet are washed before offering prayers in the mosque) in 2022.

Editorial Perspective

This is the first Court in the country, which has defined and admitted the existence of Love Jihad and sentenced the accused to life imprisonment. A question arises that if this could be done within the framework of the law, why was it not done in earlier cases ?
