VHP demands control of Government-owned temples across the country be given to Hindus

Major campaign to be launched soon

New Delhi – ‘Not only is the Tirupati Balaji Temple under Government control, but over 4 lakh temples across the country are under Government control. Our position on this matter is clear that the Government should hand over temples and their properties to the Hindu community. The real trustees of the temples are Hindus, not the Government. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) will soon launch a major campaign against Government control of Hindu temples and other religious sites’, VHP’s national spokesperson Vinod Bansal said. There is growing outrage in the country over the use of pig fat, fish oil, and fat derived from beef in the Prasad at the Tirupati temple. This has led Bansal to make the above demand.

VHP’s Secretary General Bajrang Bagra said,

1. The incident at Tirupati underlines VHP’s belief that Government control over temples allows for political interference in temple management. The appointment of non-Hindu officials in these Government-controlled temples leads to the deliberate desecration of Prasad.

2. VHP has long demanded that Hindu temples and other religious sites should not be under Government control. The use of animal fat in Tirupati’s Prasad (Laddus) is not only intolerable but also a disgusting act. This has deeply upset and hurt the entire Hindu community. The Hindu community will not tolerate such frequent assaults on their faith.

3. We believe that in light of the seriousness of this matter, the Andhra Pradesh Government and the Union Government will consider our demand seriously. There should be an impartial investigation into the case of adulteration of the Tirupati laddus, and legal action should be taken against those involved.

Editorial Perspective

With the BJP Government in power at the Centre and in many States, Hindu temples should first be freed from Government control and handed over to devotees. Hindus believe that they do not have to make such demand.
