  • Decision taken as ‘Shahi’ is an Urdu word

  • ‘Rajasi Snan’ term to be used starting from the forthcoming Prayagraj Kumbh Mela

Shri Mahant Ravindra Puri Maharaj, President, Akhada Parishad

Prayagraj – “The term ‘Shahi Snan’ has been traditionally used for the main bathing ritual during the Kumbh Mela. ‘Shahi’, however, being an Urdu word, will be removed after discussions with all the Akhadas,” informed Shri Mahant Ravindra Puri Maharaj, President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad. As an alternative to ‘Shahi’, the term ‘Rajasi’ (meaning ‘royal’ or ‘fit for a king’) will be used. Starting from the Kumbh Mela commencing on January
13, 2025, in Prayagraj, the term ‘Rajasi Snan’ will be adopted, said Puri Maharaj.

A few days ago, a procession of Shri Mahakaleshwar was taken out in Ujjain. This procession is referred to as ‘Shahi Savari’ (Royal Ride). Dr Mohan Yadav, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, was the first to refer to this procession as ‘Rajasi Savari’ (Royal Ride). Following this, all Mahants, Sadhus, Saints, and others objected to the word ‘Shahi’ used in the term ‘Shahi Snan’ during the Kumbh Mela and demanded its removal.

Words reminding of subjugation should be removed : Mahamandaleshwar Shaileshanand Maharaj, Juna Akhada

If any word stirs up bitter memories of subjugation, terror, etc., it should be removed.

Avoid using words that recall the memories of invaders : Mahamandaleshwar Atuleshanand Maharaj, Avahan Akhada

Words that refresh memories of invaders should not be used in Sanatan Dharma. Our ancient traditions should be preserved. Therefore, the word ‘Shahi’ should be removed and replaced with ‘Rajasi’.
