Hindus celebrate Muharram in non-Muslim villages of Kushtagi Taluka in Karnataka

Koppal (Karnataka) – In the Kushtagi Taluka of Koppal District, Hindus in the villages of Kurbanhal, Nagaral, and a few others celebrate Muharram despite having no Muslim residents. In the village of Kandakur, a mosque has been built. The Dotihal family in the village celebrates Muharram, a tradition that has been ongoing for the past 100 years. Members of this family have names like Hanumant Dev, Basavanna, Sharanabasava, and Tayamma Devi.

We want this tradition to be a model for future generations : Villagers

The family mentioned, “Even though people from other villages participate in Muharram, the people from our village should not be deprived of such festivals. Hence, the entire village comes together to celebrate Muharram with devotion. This tradition has been passed down since the times of our grandparents and great-grandparents. God is one and Saints and holy men from all religions work for the upliftment of humanity. The essence of all religions is the same, and therefore, we celebrate all festivals with devotion, including Muharram, disregarding religious boundaries. We want this tradition to be a model for future generations.”

Renovation of an old mosque

The old mosque in the village is being repaired, with the expenses contributed by all the villagers. Rajasab Dotihal, who organises religious events, mentioned that villagers donate according to their financial capacity for the expenses incurred during Muharram. He also stated that since there are no Muslims, their family has been assisting in celebrating Muharram since the time of their ancestors.

On the day of Muharram, people from every Hindu household visit the mosque to offer garlands and sugar to Allah. Many people fulfil vows made to Allah. A procession is taken out across the village. In the village of Nagaral, despite having no Muslim families, Muharram is celebrated enthusiastically, and all the villagers celebrate it as a ‘villagers’ festival’.
