Those who faced oppression during emergency, are supporting the oppressors today : BJP

Furious exchange over the declaration of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Divas’

New Delhi – “The Union Government has taken a right decision to observe 25thJune as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Divas’ (Constitution Assassination Day); however, those who faced oppression during emergency, are supporting the oppressors today,” stated BJP’s national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi. He accused Congress of murdering the Constitution not only in 1975 but during all its regimes. In 1951, Jawaharlal Nehru amended the Constitution for the first-time, suppressing freedom of expression when elections were yet to be held.

Amit Shah and late Indira Gandhi

On 25thJune 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi unexpectedly declared emergency, taking over all the powers in own hand. It has been fifty years since then, therefore, the Union Government declared the ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Divas’. The Opposition leaders heavily targeted the Government on this matter. Trivedi was responding to them.

Opposition leaders said,

1. Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) – It has been 50 years. BJP is looking towards the past instead of the future. Emergency was imposed in 1975 due to anarchy in the country. Had Atal Bihari Vajpayee been in a similar situation, he too would have imposed emergency.

2. Manoj Jha, Rashtriya Janata Dal : Such a step of the Government is intended at meddling with the Constitution. It is an attempt to recover from the shock of the Lok Sabha election results. Ruling BJP has a double-standard. It needs to be introspective. BJP should tender an apology to the people of this country for misusing the central investigating agencies against their political rivals and for harassing human right activists.
