Freight train collides with Kanchanjunga Express in Bengal: 15 dead, 60 injured

Darjeeling (Bengal) – A terrible accident occurred between Rangpani and Nijbari, where a freight train collided with the Kanchanjunga Express, resulting in 15 fatalities and 60 injuries. The incident happened around 9 AM on June 17. The Kanchanjunga Express was en route to Sealdah. Details about the deceased and injured are still awaited. Disaster response teams have arrived at the scene, and a relief train has been dispatched.

Rescue operations underway, says Railway Minister

Following the accident, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw arrived at the scene. He stated, “The accident in Bengal is unfortunate. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are conducting rescue operations. Injured passengers have been taken to nearby hospitals, and senior railway officials are also on-site.” Vaishnaw announced financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for those seriously injured, and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries.

Prime Minister Modi expresses grief

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the accident, calling it unfortunate. He offered his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
