London (England) – Following the announcement of the general elections in Britain, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faces a new challenge as MPs from the ruling Conservative Party have started resigning. Among those stepping down are senior party leaders Michael Gove and Andrea Leadsom. This brings the total number of Conservative MPs retiring from politics to 78, with the overall number of British MPs resigning reaching 122. The elections are
scheduled for 4thJuly.

This is the largest number of MPs refusing to contest elections since the 2010 general elections. The Lower House of the British Parliament has a total of 650 MPs.

Reasons for resigning before the general elections :

1. Pathetic condition of the Conservative Party – Many party MPs are certain that the party will be defeated in the upcoming elections.

2. Increasing age of many MPs – Although age of the MP’s is said to be a factor, yet some MPs who are under 30 are also opting out of the elections.

3. Career changes – Some MPs are leaving politics to pursue other professions.

4. Avoiding tense politics – Some MPs want to distance themselves from the stressful political environment.
