Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – The Kerala High Court has upheld the death sentence for Mohammad Amir-ul-Islam in the case of rape and murder of a law student. The body of the student from the Ernakulam Government Law College was found at her home in Perumbavoor on 2nd April 2016. This incident sparked significant protests at the time, especially because the victim belonged to a Dalit community, which further fueled public outrage. Amir-ul-Islam, a migrant worker from Assam, was arrested for the crime. Under the influence of alcohol, he broke into the student’s home, raped her, and then murdered her.

In 2017, the Ernakulam Sessions Court sentenced Islam to death. He appealed to the Kerala High Court, which has confirmed the Sessions Court’s decision.
