Kathmandu (Nepal) – The new currency notes of Nepal will feature Nepal’s map. Mr Chiranjibi Nepal, the Economic Advisor to Nepal’s President, opposed the Government’s decision to issue new hundred-rupee currency notes showing a map that include Indian territories. Mr Chiranjibi had served as the Governor of ‘Nepal Central Bank’. There was a demand for his removal due to his criticising the Government’s decision. He has, however, voluntarily tendered his resignation from the post.

1. Nepal’s cabinet of Ministers, led by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda decided to issue new hundred-rupee currency notes a few days ago, with Nepal’s map showing the Indian territory of Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani as part of Nepal.

2. In an interview given to an English Indian newspaper, Mr Chiranjibi stated that the decision of the Nepal Government to show Indian territory on its currency notes was illogical. His statement was opposed by Nepal’s former Prime Minister and other politicians, demanding his ouster from the post.

3. On 18th June 2020, a bill was passed by Nepal’s Parliament to legitimise the amendment of the Constitution to add the Indian territories of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura to Nepal’s map. These three territories historically belong to India. India declared that Nepal’s action was unilateral and called Nepal’s regional claims of unnatural extensions, imprudent.

Editorial Perspective

Like the Maldives, Nepal is dancing to the tune of China, which can lead to Nepal’s destruction. If these tiny countries don’t want to learn from the mistakes of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, even their destiny would not be able to help them.
