Radioactive devices are being stolen in the country for last 20 years

These devices if reach the terrorists, may create havoc

New Delhi – The country has been witnessing continuous thefts of radioactive devices for the last 20 years. These devices were stolen from the hospitals, mining sites, research centres etc., where these devices were in use. It is a matter of great concern. It is extremely dangerous if these devices reach the terrorists. The point to be noted is that the Investigation Agencies could not trace the thieves and the buyers of this equipment, till today. There is no clue to find out whether terrorist groups have bought these devices. On the other hand, the scrap dealers are interested in buying these devices. In many cases, the Police have received information about the devices in the scrap market, but during the search, nothing could be found. Terrorists can procure these radioactive devices not only from Indian criminals and scrap dealers but from other countries too.

Experts say that terrorists can easily make R.E.D. (Radiological exposure device) or R.D.D (Radiological dispersal device). R.E.D. can spread radiation in public places. R.D.D. connects radioactive material to explosives like dynamite, which is called a ‘dirty bomb’. Dynamite explosion creates radiation over a large area which can lead to a grave disaster.

Dr Manpreet Sethi, the expert at the ‘Centre for Air Power Studies’, said, terrorists cannot lay their hands on Indian nuclear bombs, because the security is multi-layered. The control is also not at one point, but there is a possibility of making a ‘dirty bomb’ by connecting radioactive devices and it is a matter of concern to our Security Agencies.

From 2012 to 2022, a few radiation detection devices were installed at the Atari Border. Additionally, ports too have been installed with these devices.
