Halal Certification to food items other than meat is anti-Islamic : Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi

Maulana demands setting up a Halal Board to the UP Government

(Maulana means an Islamic scholar)

New Delhi – “A mere piece of paper cannot certify an item to be ‘Halal'(permitted) or ‘Haram’ (forbidden) under the Islamic law. People and organisations who are involved in doing this are criminals. Firstly, they have acted against the Islamic law. They gave a piece of paper and certified an item to be Halal. Secondly, if they had not issued the certificate, the customer would have verified by himself and found out whether the item is Halal or Haram; however, customers are being cheated by issuing Halal certificates”, said Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, President of “All India Muslim Jamaat’, criticising the Islamic organisations that issue Halal certificates. Maulana Razvi Bareilvi was responding to the Uttar Pradesh Government’s ban on halal products and certificates.

Maulana Razvi Bareilvi pointed out,

1. Organisations which are issuing these certificates are cheating Muslims in the name of religion. This is a business done in Allah’s name. There is no other business in the world that runs in the name of Allah.

2. Only meat can be certified as Halal. If Halal certification is issued for other items, then it is a misuse of a holy word. As per the Islamic law, the word Halal is only used for animal meat. Other items may be permitted or forbidden; but they should not be certified as Halal.

3. Some organisations have started commercialising Halal Certification. It has become a source of income. They went so far as to certify vegetables, fruits, biscuits etc. as Halal. Muslim organisations should refrain from doing such things.

4. The Government of Uttar Pradesh should set up a Halal Board and give its responsibility to people who are able to work as per the Islamic law.
