Mumbai – In Uttan Chowk locality at Mira Bhaindar (West) in Mumbai, the Municipal Corporation has named a Bus Stop ‘Bangladesh’. Earlier migrants from other States, especially refugees from Bengal settled here to work in the fishing trade. Hence, this locality was commonly called ‘Bangladesh’, but now the Municipal Corporation has officially named the Bus Stop here ‘Bangladesh’. (Anti-social and anti-national Municipal Corporation officials take no action against illegal settlements for years together, legalise them and even name Bus Stops officially after them. – Editor). This has enraged the local citizens who are demanding, ‘The administration should take note of this and change the name soon’ (The citizens should pursue the matter with the Administration until the name of the Bus Stop is changed. – Editor)

Uttan is a sea-side locality at Bhaindar West. There had once been a need for labourers to work as sailors in this locality. Labourers from Bengal came in large numbers to settle here and work as sailors. Since they spoke the Bengali language, this place was commonly called ‘Bangladeshi Settlement’.

The settlement was called ‘Indira Nagar’ after ‘Bangladesh’ was formed during the leadership of Indira Gandhi but the name ‘Bangladesh’ remained popular and even got mentioned in the local citizens’ Aadhar card, Electricity bill and the Corporation Property tax bill.

Editorial Viewpoints

  • Today a Bus Stop has been named ‘Bangladesh’, would it be astonishing if tomorrow an entire suburb is named thus ?
  • Who will ascertain whether the residents of the locality are really citizens from Bengal or illegal Bangladeshi immigrants ?
