New Delhi – The Twitter account of ‘BBC News Punjabi’ (@bbcnewspunjabi) has been withheld in India by Union Government. On visiting said Twitter profile, it returns the following message – @bbcnewspunjabi’s account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand. It is said that the action was taken on account for spreading support to Khalistani separatist and Punjab Waris De chief Amritpal Singh. Such action has been taken on the BBC before as well. In January this year, the Indian Government blocked the BBC’s contentious documentary named ‘India: The Modi Question’ about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Gujarat riots of 2002.

On 19th March 2023, pro-Khalistan MP and Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) chief Simranjit Singh Mann’s Twitter account was withheld in India in response to a legal demand. A day later, the Twitter account of Canadian lawmaker Jagmeet Singh was withheld in India. He had condemned the action of the Punjab Police in the Khalistani Amritpal case.
