Shinzo Abe, Former Prime Minister of Japan

Tokyo (Japan) – Shinzo Abe, Former Prime Minister of Japan was shot dead by an assailant. Abe was shot twice at his back by an assailant while addressing a rally in the western Japanese city of Nara. The incident took place on July 8, at 8:30 am Indian time. The attacker has been arrested and the Police have recovered a gun from him. He has been identified as a former Japanese naval officer. Abe suffered a heart attack after the gunshots. He was immediately taken to the hospital. However, he passed away in 2 hours. Japan is shocked by this incident. Shinzo Abe is the only longest-serving Prime Minister of Japan. He resigned as Japan’s prime minister in 2020 due to health issues. Various dignitaries from around the world paid tribute to Abe. The motive behind the assassination is not clear yet.

He had visited India 5 times

Abe had visited India 5 times so far. He was the only Prime Minister to have visited India so many times. Along with PM Modi, he had also attended the Ganga River Aarti at Varanasi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over Shinzo Abe`s death.

He tweeted saying, “I am shocked and saddened beyond words at the tragic demise of one of my dearest friends, Shinzo Abe. He was a towering global statesman, an outstanding leader, and a remarkable administrator. He dedicated his life to make Japan and the world a better place.”

One day of national mourning in India

As a mark of deepest respect for former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, one-day national mourning on 9th July 2022 has been announced.
