Supreme Court slams farmers’ organisations protesting on highways !
Editorial comment
The people feel that the Court should order the Government to remove the protesters from there and fine them for causing loss to the public. |
New Delhi – ‘After suffocating the whole city, you want to come inside the city. Are the citizens living here happily with your movement ? These protests must stop.’ slammed the Supreme Court. The farmers’ organisations approached the Court asking for permission to protest against the agricultural laws at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The organisations had said that 200 farmers should be allowed to gather for peaceful and non-violent agitation at Jantar Mantar. Farmers have been protesting outside the city limits for several months in protest of the Government’s agricultural laws, leading to traffic problems.

The Court said the Court should be trusted after challenging the law in Court. You have the right to protest, but you have no right to get people into trouble by blocking national highways.
In a hearing on the demand on 30th September, the Court had said, how can protesters block highways every day ? The authorities must carry out the procedure prescribed by the Court. Whatever the problem, it can be resolved through discussion in the judiciary or the Parliament. A woman from Noida has filed a petition alleging that it takes 2 hours instead of 20 minutes to reach Delhi from Noida as the Delhi border is closed, and it is like a nightmare.

The Court had said in a hearing in August that farmers had the right to protest, but those roads cannot be closed indefinitely. The Central and State Governments should address the transportation problems faced by the people in the National Capital Region.
