Only 6 out of 326 suspects convicted of sedition charges between 2014-2019 : Union Home Ministry data

If the criminals are not duly punished even after many years of the crime being committed, will the crime ever reduce ? All the political party leaders should be ashamed of it.


New Delhi – As per the data of the Union Home Ministry, out of the 326 sedition cases registered in the country between 2014 and 2019, only 6 were convicted. According to the Ministry, the data for 2020 was not ready.

1. Out of the 326 registered cases, 40 cases were from Jharkhand, 39 from Haryana, 25 each from Kerala, Bihar and J&K, 22 from Karnataka, 17 from UP, 8 from Bengal, 4 from Delhi and 1 each from Maharashtra, Punjab & Uttarakhand. There were some registered cases from other States also.

2. Assam had 54 registered cases, the highest in the country, and no one was convicted between 2014 and 2019.

3. Charge sheets were filed for 141 cases over the six years, and only six were convicted.

4. Challenging the functionality of Section 124A of the IPC, the SC expressed its concern over the misuse of the law. Why was the law which was used by the British to punish veteran Freedom Fighters like Lokmanya Tilak not abolished even after 75 Years of Independence ?
