Colombo (Sri Lanka) – The Sri Lankan Government has made it mandatory to cremate corona victims’ dead bodies. As a result the dead are being cremated regardless of what religion they belonged to.
However, the Muslims have raised objections to this ‘forced cremation’. 15 dead Muslims including a 20 day old infant have been cremated as of 16th December 2020. The latest cremation has seen heightened protests against Government’s cremation policy. Earlier a petition filed in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka was rejected by the Court.

- In April 2020 when the pandemic situation worsened, Buddhist monks had demanded that all corona victims irrespective of their religion be cremated. They had claimed that burying bodies could contaminate ground water and spread the virus.
- The question has now been raised that if Sri Lankan citizen dies abroad then how the funeral should be conducted ? Sri Lanka has refused to repatriate their dead.
