Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Bangladesh appears to be on the brink of a major political upheaval. A large-scale military deployment is underway in the capital, Dhaka, and other major cities. Senior military officials have convened an emergency meeting, fuelling speculations of an imminent military coup to remove the Interim Government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to visit China, and it is being speculated that the coup might take place during his absence. So far, neither Yunus nor Bangladesh’s Army Chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, has issued any statement on the matter.

1. On 24thMarch, Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman chaired an emergency meeting, attended by five Lieutenant Generals, eight Major Generals (GOCs), commanding officers of Independent Brigades, and senior officials from the army headquarters. According to sources, the meeting also addressed the threat of terrorist attacks, prompting the Army Chief to issue orders for heightened security measures.

2. In recent days, Dhaka has come entirely under military control. Soldiers from the Bangladesh Army and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were seen patrolling the streets. Military personnel have set up checkpoints along the roads, where vehicles are stopped and searched. Although initially described as a law-and-order measure, the situation has fuelled speculations of a coup following General Zaman’s meeting.

3. Reports of strained relations between Muhammad Yunus and the military have been circulating for some time. Statements from both sides have contributed to the growing tension. Political analysts believe that the differences between the Government and the Army Chief have deepened, making a military takeover increasingly likely.
