New Delhi – India and China are once again working toward improving relations, said Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar. He was speaking at an interactive session of the ‘Asia Society.’ “We understand that differences between India and China will continue to arise in the future; however, these differences can be resolved through dialogue and other peaceful means without resorting to conflict,” he clarified.

Dr Jaishankar’s key points :
1. Tensions are harmful : The Galwan Valley incident in 2020 was not a constructive way to resolve issues, and tensions do not benefit either side.
2. Painful incident : The Galwan clash was deeply distressing. It was not just a confrontation but a breach of written agreements. While some aspects of the issue are still being addressed, the core principle of respecting agreements remains intact.
3. Peace over conflict : Although India and China may compete on various fronts, conflict is not the solution. Maintaining peace at the border is crucial; otherwise, broader diplomatic and economic relations suffer.
4. Progress since October 2024 : There has been some improvement in relations since late 2024. Efforts are ongoing, with multiple diplomatic meetings taking place. While fully compensating for the damage caused in 2020 may be challenging, India is taking gradual steps to address the situation.
Editorial PerspectiveIndia must have already learnt by now from history that it is necessary to remain vigilant and not blindly trust China when trying to improve relations. |
