1. President Emomali Rahmon, who has been in power since 1992, has previously characterized the Islamic hijab as a societal issue, leading to its ban in Tajikistan. He has encouraged women to adopt traditional Tajik dress. Additionally, the government has prohibited long beards.
2. In the beginning of 2015, many Tajik citizens joined the terrorist organization ‘Islamic State’. Considering these incidents, the Government of Tajikistan has taken this decision.
3. About 98 percent of the population in Tajikistan practice Islam. Despite such a large Muslim population, the country’s administration functions formally as a secular government.
Editorial PerspectiveIn Tajikistan, an Islamic country, the focus is on promoting local traditions rather than encouraging practices like the hijab and beard. In contrast, some Muslim communities in India emphasize Arabic traditions over local customs, which is infuriating. |
