Additional tariffs to be imposed on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China

  • India excluded from the tariff list

  • Decision by newly elected US President Donald Trump

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump

Washington, US – Donald Trump, the newly elected President of the United States, is set to assume office on 20 January 2025. During a campaign rally before his victory, Trump had accused India of unfair trade practices concerning import tariffs. Following his election, speculation arose that Trump might impose tariffs on $75 billion worth of Indian exports to the US. However, Trump has now announced the imposition of additional tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China while excluding India from the list.

1.In a post shared on social media, Trump stated, “After assuming the responsibilities of the US Presidency, I will impose a 25% tariff on all goods coming from Mexico and Canada.”

2.He further said, “Unless the Chinese Government curbs the smuggling of the drug ‘fentanyl,’ I will sign an order imposing an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods.”

3.In 2019, the US withdrew India’s tariff-free access under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program. India was the largest beneficiary of this scheme, which allowed tariff-free exports worth approximately $5.7 billion (Rs 48,000 crore) to the US.
