New Delhi – The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for seven states on 17th September, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala. Eastern Madhya Pradesh is expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall (up to 12 cm). Similarly, heavy rainfall (around 7 cm) is expected in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand.
Rainfall in some States :
1. Rajasthan : Heavy rainfall is predicted in 15 districts of Rajasthan.
2. Madhya Pradesh : An extreme rainfall alert has been issued in 38 districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal and Jabalpur.
3. Uttar Pradesh : Continuous heavy rainfall over the past five days has caused rivers like Saryu, Sharda, Ganga, and Ghaghra to overflow. In Varanasi, 25,000 people have been affected by floods. 85 ghats have been submerged in the Ganga River. In Prayagraj, the Ganga and Yamuna rivers have swelled, causing waterlogging and forcing people to evacuate to safer locations. In Lakhimpur, 170 villages have been flooded due to the Sharda River overflowing, affecting over 1,00,000 people. In Gonda, 3 people have died after drowning in the Ghaghra River, and 20 villages have been submerged.
4. Himachal Pradesh : As of now, 171 people have lost their lives due to the ongoing monsoon rains, which are expected to last until September 21. An alert for thunderstorms with heavy rainfall has been issued for six districts on 18th September. So far, 171 people have died in rain-related incidents in the state, with 30 still missing.
Monsoon to remain active for 16 days longer this year
The monsoon season typically starts retreating from western Rajasthan after 18th September, but this year it is expected to remain active for another 16 days. This means heavy rains are likely to continue until the end of September.
Drought conditions in 185 Districts (26%)
Despite the overall increased rainfall during this monsoon season, approximately one-fourth of the country, or 185 districts (26%), are facing drought-like conditions.
