New Delhi – A Delhi court has directed the registration of a murder case against Congress leader and former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler in connection with the 1984 Delhi anti-Sikh riots. The court has formally framed charges against Tytler under multiple sections of the law. The next hearing is scheduled for September 13. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had submitted a chargesheet against Tytler on May 20, 2023.
On November 1, 1984, a witness claimed that Jagdish Tytler exited an Ambassador car in front of Gurudwara Pul Bangash in Delhi and incited a mob to attack Sikhs. Following this, the Gurdwara was set on fire, resulting in the deaths of three individuals.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had previously cleared Tytler of charges in the Sikh riots case on three occasions. In 2007, after his first acquittal, the court dismissed the findings of innocence and ordered a retrial. In 2013, the CBI once more acquitted Tytler, citing insufficient evidence. However, when petitioners challenged this decision, the court intervened in December 2015. The court instructed the CBI to conduct a more thorough investigation and mandated that it provide updates every two months to ensure that all aspects of the case were properly examined.
