The incident of landslide in Wayanad is an example of nature’s revenge against human greed : Kerala High Court

Cited ignoring the warning given by the nature in the name of development

Wayanad (Kerala) – Last month, a landslide in various hilly areas near Meppadi in Wayanad district of Kerala had caused extensive damage. Hundreds of people had died due to this natural calamities. Now, the Kerala High Court has come down heavily and passed strong remark on the incident. Court said, the landslide that claimed more than 200 lives is an example of nature’s revenge against human apathy and greed.

1. The High Court, while commenting on this point, said that the incident at Wayanad was forewarned a long time ago; but in the name of development, we felt it was right to ignore it. The natural disasters of 2018 and 2019, the nearly two-year-old coronavirus pandemic and the recent landslides highlight our mistakes.

2. In its order dated August 23, the bench said the court has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter to compel the government to introspect on the sustainable development of the state of Kerala and reconsider its policy in this regard.

The target will be achieved in three phases !

The court said it will review the policies of the state with respect to the objectives of protection of natural resources, protection of environment, forests and wildlife, prevention, management and sustainable development of natural calamities. This work will be carried out in three phases under which the ecologically sensitive areas of the state will be identified and then their district-wise list will be prepared. The bench also made it clear that the court will monitor the rescue, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Wayanad district.
