New Delhi – Sheikh Hasina has alleged the US role behind the ouster of her Government. The allegation was made through a message sent to an English daily by the people close to her. The US wanted to acquire St Martin’s Island of Bangladesh and establish a naval and military base there. By establishing this base, the US could have exerted its influence in the Bay of Bengal; however, Sheikh Hasina refused to give this island to the USA. A few months ago, Sheikh Hasina had stated, “A white man had come to me.” It is now clear that the ‘white man’ referred to the US.

Sheikh Hasina, in her appeal to the citizens of Bangladesh, said, “I did not want to see a pile of dead bodies in my country, so I resigned. Some people wanted to come to power by stepping over the bodies of students, but I did not let that happen. I resigned from the position of Prime Minister. The US is trying to acquire St Martin’s Island. If I had given up the sovereignty of that island, the US could have easily established its dominance in the Bay of Bengal, but I did not let that happen. I urge the people of the country not to be misled by some extremists. Do not fall victim to their politics.”
