Chennai – Those affected by the 2004 Tsunami had encroached a temple land on ‘East Coast Road’ and began living there. The bench of Justice D Krishnamurthy and Justice P B Balaji of the Madras High Court has ordered the State Charity Department to either shift these people to another place or charge rent to use the temple land.
In 2022, the State Charity Department issued notices to the people who encroached the temple land and asked to return the land.
These illegal residents ignored Charity Commissioner’s notice and refused to move from the temple land. They subsequently approached the Madras High Court.
After hearing the petition filed by Sandiran and 36 others, the Court observed ‘If the petitioners are ready to vacate the temple land, they will be given the necessary time to do so, else if they are ready to give rent for the temple land that they are occupying, the Charity Department could give them the status of tenants.’
