Crew assaulted

Mohali (Punjab) – During the filming of TV series ‘Udaariyaan’, Nihang Sikhs attacked and vandalised the set, and assaulted the production staff In Mohali (Punjab). Following the incident, the Police arrived at the scene and took everyone to the Police station. The Nihang Sikhs opposed the creation of a replica of Gurudwara, claiming it insulted the Guru Granth Sahib.

1. A scene depicting Sikh wedding was to be filmed, for which a Gurudwara was erected. Three Granthis (priests in the Gurudwara) were also called for the scene. However, the Nihang Sikhs arrived during the shoot and vandalised the set and assaulted the crew.

2. The Nihang Sikhs threatened that if the Police did not handle the matter properly, they would take it into their own hands. They informed the Police that they had made a complete video of the set. The Granthis were brought on the set with an honorarium of Rs
1000 each. The most distressing thing was that their Guru was being disrespected before the eyes of the Sikhs.

3. Upon learning about the incident, Punjabi actor Jarnail Singh arrived at the scene. He stated, ” I am a Sikh myself. Sikh sentiments have been hurt here. Showing the wedding of a Sikh youth in a film is a good initiative for any community, but there should be a method or way for it. The ‘Shiromani Parbandhak Committee’ should make rules regarding the carrying of Shri Guru Granth Sahib during films.”

Editorial Perspectives

  • Considering the frequent cases of taking the law into own hands by Nihang Sikhs, the people should demand revoking permission given to them to possess weapons.
  • Similar to Muslims, Sikhs also take the law into their own hands when their faith is challenged, and no one opposes them. On the contrary, even if the Hindus protest in the most legitimate way, they are labelled intolerant for jeopardising the freedom of expression.
