The issue caused disharmony for the past 32 years

Bareilly (UP) – For the past 32 years, a procession has been held in a Hindu-majority area during the Muslim festival of Muharram. During this procession, a tall Tazia is carried. Due to its height, the branch of an ancient Peepal tree was becoming an obstacle, which had also led to disputes in the past. Each year, a 30-foot long and 4-feet deep pit was dug at this spot to allow the procession to pass. In view of these recurring issues, this year, Hindus came forward to cut the obstructing branch of the Peepal tree.

1. To resolve this issue, discussions initially began between local councillor Anees Saklaini and BJP leader Sanjeev Mishra. The branch was cut with the consent of the Hindus. Despite the narrow path, Muslims were adamantly insisting on taking the Tazia through this
route, which led to tensions. The branch was cut to ease these tensions.
2. A local resident mentioned that the Peepal tree is 250 years old and adjacent to a temple. Earlier, there was no problem, but the road was raised during repairs, causing the branch to obstruct the Tazia.
3. BJP leader Sanjeev Mishra added that, “There were multiple sittings mediated by Police officials and civic authorities. The area has 80% Hindus. We brought them to a common platform. After multiple talks, it was decided to cut the branch.”
