Opposition turned its back on the Indian Constitution : Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar
New Delhi – After Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to Rahul Gandhi’s speeches in the Lok Sabha, he also addressed the Rajya Sabha on July 3. During this time, the opposition tried to protest against the Prime Minister but, seeing that they were not succeeding, they walked out. Rajya Sabha Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed regret over this. He said it was an extremely sad and unrestrained act. He said, “I spoke to them, I requested them. I gave the leaders of the opposition a chance to speak without any hindrance. Today, they did not just walk out of the house, they walked out of their responsibilities. Today, they did not turn their backs on me, but on the Indian Constitution. Today, they did not disrespect me and you, but the oath they took in the presence of the Constitution. There can be no greater insult to the Indian Constitution.”
The opposition demanded that Prime Minister Modi stop his speech, but they did not succeed. During this time, Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, was at the forefront. He came to the front of the Speaker’s seat and requested Prime Minister Modi to stop his speech. Annoyed by this behaviour, Rajya Sabha Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar reprimanded the opposition. Ultimately, the opposition walked out.
Speaker Dhankhar said, “We have to guide the nation. The 1.4 billion people of the country might be saddened by this. If the opposition has presented their view, they should also listen to the view of the ruling party. This is what a house is for.”
